WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ART?
It wasn't my initial intention to pursue art as a career. Quick story that influenced my decision to drastically switch up the plan. I experienced culture shock when I went away to college. I was initially a Computer Science major, which was 100% motivated by earning potential. When I moved onto campus six hours away from friends and family freshman year, I discovered I was the only black in my college dormitory, the only black on my college basketball team, and the only black in my computer science classes. I always felt out of place. It wasn't until I took a required prerequisite art class that something "felt" right. At that time, I still wasn't around a lot of people of color, but I was around my type of people --far less judgmental, and a lot more grounded. The new found atmosphere in the art class organically complemented my personality and natural talents. Too afraid to make a full leap into Fine Arts (painting, sculpture, drawing, etc.), I kept Computer Science as my minor and changed my major to Graphic Design.
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WERE CREATIVE?
I guess there were a series of events that led to me discovering I could draw. I went from a 5 year old who pulled inspiration from watching how well my Mom colored in the lines, to buying cool tracing books at the grade school book store, to finally trying to freehand what I saw without tracing. After discovering that I could replicate basic characters without tracing, I quickly grew from drawing basic cartoon characters to drawing people. That’s when I knew I was creative. (That lightbulb went off around middle school.) I’ve since learned that everyone is creative in some form or fashion, we just have to discover it.
WHY THE NAME TANJA CREATIVE PRO?
When I first started freelancing back in 2015, I knew then that there were a few other avenues I would take that were not related to graphic design. Not only that, it's so much a professional Graphic Designer does that may go unrecognized. Often times Senior Graphic Designers (along with Graphic Designers and Visual Designers), utilize photography and videography skillsets, illustration, web design and web development, user interface design (i.e. mobile apps), motion graphics, production management, client management, etc.
That said, "Creative Professional" is a loose way of describing what I've already done and will continue to do moving forward.
Create. PROduce. PROvide.... PROfessionally.
